{"id":13737,"date":"2020-11-09T08:15:06","date_gmt":"2020-11-09T07:15:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.waitaly.net\/how-to-open-italian-bank-acconut\/"},"modified":"2025-07-28T10:44:48","modified_gmt":"2025-07-28T08:44:48","slug":"how-to-open-italian-bank-acconut","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.waitaly.net\/en\/how-to-open-italian-bank-acconut\/","title":{"rendered":"How to open a bank account in Italy (even as a non-resident)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How many times have you wondered about the difficulty of being able to open a bank account in Italy, accustomed, probably, to the bureaucratic jungle for each and every practice.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In fact,<strong>opening a bank account <\/strong>in Italy<strong> <\/strong>can be easy and straightforward, and requires few<strong> requirements<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">That the new client is of legal age;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Who is not registered in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.treccani.it\/vocabolario\/protesto\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">protest<\/a> regime;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Who should not have been declared bankrupt in the past.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In general, Italian banks also require an identification document (ID card or passport) and the tax code (which can also be requested by foreigners not resident in Italy).<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do you have to be a resident of Italy to open a bank account?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In certain cases, an account can also be opened by someone who lives abroad for study or work but needs an account in Italy, or by a <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.waitaly.net\/en\/arrive-in-italy\/\">foreigner who is not resident in Italy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Who do we refer to when we talk about &#8220;<strong>nonresidents<\/strong>&#8220;? All people who do not have tax residence in Italy. They can be either Italians or foreigners who:  <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Have not been registered for at least 183 days in the resident registry;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Have not been domiciled in Italy for at least six months;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Do not have habitual residence in Italy for at least 183 days a year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Should these requirements be met, a citizen residing abroad will also be able to sign up for a current account in Italy.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having handed over the necessary documents, the bank can issue the contract and information sheet for the account and will hand it to the customer for signature: once signed, it will be immediately possible to use the service.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The account can be opened, therefore, by foreign nationals even if they are not resident in our country, such as those applying for a <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.waitaly.net\/en\/arrive-in-italy\/welcome-former-students\/\">residence permit for pending employment<\/a>, who, having found a job, will need the availability of an Italian bank account for the employer&#8217;s payment of wages.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Opening a bank account in Italy as a resident<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In order to open a bank account in Italy, the first step to follow is to read well the contract <strong>information sheet<\/strong> issued by the bank: this is a document that contains all the information about the costs of the various operations, any risks, the expected return and all the other clauses proposed by the contract with the banking institution.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Upon accepting the proposal, the bank will require the submission of certain documents to proceed:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Copy of an identity document;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Copy of the <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.waitaly.net\/en\/italian-tax-code\/\">social security number<\/a>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Possible copy of residence certificate (not required by all institutions).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As an Italian resident citizen you can open two types of accounts:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">regular checking account;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">deposit account.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the other hand, if you are not a resident of Italy, most banks will not give you the option of opening a deposit account.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Opening a bank account in Italy as a non-resident<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a rule, banks cannot deny the right to open a current account in Italy even if you do not reside in the country<a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/IT\/TXT\/PDF\/?uri=CELEX:32014L0092\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(Directive 2014\/92\/EU<\/a> of the European Parliament). This also applies, for example, in the case of asylum seekers. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without residence in Italy, however, the bank may <strong>limit the services <\/strong>available to you, allowing you to open only a &#8220;<strong>basic current account<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This type of account authorizes the use of only essential functions, such as:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Make a deposit;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">withdrawing cash;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Receive or make payments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A good option for foreign nationals is to open a bank account in Italy in a <strong>bank based in several countries<\/strong>, for example, the English HSBC, the American Citibank or the German Deutsche Bank.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Documents required to open a bank account as a nonresident<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you want to open the <strong>account as a nonresident<\/strong> with an <strong>Italian bank<\/strong>, the required documents are:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">A valid passport;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">A document proving residence in the foreign country (e.g., a utility bill or lease agreement);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The declaration of tax residence outside Italy;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">A bank reference letter or a minimum deposit of money.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For those who need to transact international business, some banks offer the option of a <strong>multi-currency checking account<\/strong>. This account allows the management of different currencies (euros, dollars, pounds, etc.) within one current account.
