A reality born to create community<\/h2>\n\n
Students4Students was created in the context of the University of Bergamo as a space for students to meet, participate and come together.<\/p>\n\n
Its activities take shape from a simple but essential idea: to make the university experience more alive, shared and close to the real needs of students. The university, in fact, is not only the place of lectures, exams and administrative services. It is also a space for relationships, confrontation, personal growth and belonging. <\/p>\n\n
In this sense, Students4Students contributes to strengthening the community dimension of the university. Through convivial moments, initiatives and opportunities for participation, the association works to create bonds among students and to make university life more dynamic and engaging. <\/p>\n\n
This focus on sociability is also an important element in thinking about hosting international students. Those arriving from abroad need not only practical information or administrative support, but also places where they can meet other students, build relationships, and progressively feel part of the university community. <\/p>\n\n
From sociality to representation<\/h2>\n\n
One of the most interesting aspects of Students4Students is its ability to hold together two complementary dimensions: community building and student representation.<\/p>\n\n
The association was also born as a space for socializing, but over time it has been able to transform this presence among students into a broader form of listening and participation. Indeed, being close to the everyday university life means being able to collect needs, observe difficulties, understand needs and bring them to the places where the functioning of the university is discussed. <\/p>\n\n
Students4Students participates in university elections and contributes to the presence of students in university bodies. Representation, in this perspective, is not just a formal function, but a tool to give students a voice and contribute to the improvement of the academic experience. <\/p>\n\n
Among the examples that emerged during the discussion was the issue of the calculation of 30 cum laude<\/strong>, with respect to which Students4Students promoted a reflection aimed at greater uniformity with the criteria adopted in other universities. This is a concrete example of how a student reality can start from an issue felt by the university community and turn it into a topic of dialogue with the university. <\/p>\n\nStudent participation and university life<\/h2>\n\n
Students4Students fits into a university context in which student participation is an essential element in bringing the university closer to its community.<\/p>\n\n
The quality of the university experience depends not only on the teaching or services offered, but also on the possibility of experiencing the university as an open, accessible and participatory space. Student associations perform precisely this function: they create opportunities to meet, activate informal networks, foster the circulation of information and make it easier for students to feel part of university life. <\/p>\n\n
The presence of entities such as Students4Students helps build bridges between students, representation and the university institution. It is in these spaces that ideas, proposals and collaborations capable of concretely improving the student experience can be born. <\/p>\n\n
For this reason, the comparison with Students4Students was particularly useful for WAI: it allowed us to observe the role that an active student body can play not only in representation, but also in building relationships and promoting a more inclusive university.<\/p>\n\n
The value of participation for international students<\/h2>\n\n
In the WAI Atlas journey, the discussion with Students4Students was also important to reflect on the role student associations can play in welcoming international students.<\/p>\n\n
Those arriving from abroad must orient themselves in a new university setting, understand the workings of the university, get to know the city, build relationships, and fit into a community that is often different from their home community.<\/p>\n\n
In this journey, participation in student life can make a difference. Events, group activities, convivial times and association initiatives can help international students overcome initial disorientation and feel part of the university community. <\/p>\n\n
Students4Students, precisely because of its focus on sociality and participation, represents an interesting reality to be enhanced. Its experience shows how integration does not only come through dedicated services, but also through daily opportunities for students to meet each other. <\/p>\n\n
Create opportunities for Italian and international students to meet<\/h2>\n\n
One of the themes that emerged during the discussion concerned the importance of creating more cross-cultural opportunities for Italian and international students to meet.<\/p>\n\n
In many university settings, international students naturally tend to relate primarily to compatriots or students from culturally and linguistically close countries. This dynamic can be a spontaneous form of peer support, especially in the early months of the college experience. <\/p>\n\n
At the same time, it makes it even more important to promote spaces where students from different backgrounds can get to know each other through common interests, shared activities and moments of participation.<\/p>\n\n
In this regard, student associations can play a valuable role. They not only organize events, but also help to create contexts in which students can relate naturally. <\/p>\n\n
Students4Students, through its activities, can help strengthen this community dimension, fostering a university that is more open, participatory and capable of including students with different backgrounds, languages and paths.<\/p>\n\n
The beginning of the university journey as a decisive moment<\/h2>\n\n
For many international students, the beginning of the university journey represents the most delicate time.<\/p>\n\n
In the first few months, the student must acclimate to a new city, understand the workings of the university, manage academic activities, build new relationships, and balance study, daily life, and extra-university activities.<\/p>\n\n
At this stage, welcoming cannot be reduced to the mere transmission of information. We also need meeting opportunities, accessible settings and spaces where students can feel welcome. <\/p>\n\n
Student associations can contribute significantly to this process. Through initiatives, informal moments, and group activities, they can help students fit more easily into the university community. <\/p>\n\n
Students4Students, due to its aggregative and representative nature, can be a useful interlocutor in this direction: a reality capable of accompanying students’ lives not only through representation, but also through relationship building.<\/p>\n\n
The positive elements to be enhanced<\/h2>\n\n
Some positive elements of the university experience at the University of Bergamo also emerged during the discussion.<\/p>\n\n
Among these, the availability of professors was emphasized, which is considered an important resource for accompanying students in moments of difficulty or disorientation. The direct relationship with professors can help make the academic journey more accessible and strengthen the perception of welcome within the university. <\/p>\n\n
An additional positive element concerns the presence of overseas exchange programs, which help to strengthen the international dimension of the university and expand students’ educational opportunities.<\/p>\n\n
Alongside these aspects, the presence of a reality such as Students4Students itself represents an element to be valued. Indeed, an active student community, capable of aggregating, representing and proposing, contributes to making the university more dynamic and closer to students’ needs. <\/p>\n\n
A reality to be enhanced<\/h2>\n\n
In the WAI Atlas of University Hospitality journey, entities such as Students4Students represent important interlocutors because they allow us to look at the university from the perspective of students and the networks they build.<\/p>\n\n
Students4Students offers an example of student participation rooted in the Bergamo university area, capable of combining aggregation, representation and attention to the academic community.<\/p>\n\n
His experience shows that welcoming international students does not depend only on administrative procedures or formal services. It also depends on being able to participate, build relationships, share interests and feel part of a community. <\/p>\n\n
In this sense, Students4Students represents a reality to be enhanced: an association capable of transforming student presence into participation, listening and representation.<\/p>\n\n
Toward a more participatory and international university<\/h2>\n\n
The university of the future will have to be increasingly able to accommodate students with different languages, backgrounds and paths.<\/p>\n\n
This means making information more accessible, strengthening support at the arrival and orientation stages, improving communication of opportunities, and creating real opportunities for integration into daily life.<\/p>\n\n
It also means valuing student associations as places for participation, growth and relationships.<\/p>\n\n
Students4Students shows how a student body can help make the university experience more participatory, open and close to students. Through representation, aggregation and dialogue with the academic community, the association provides a space where students can meet, discuss and contribute to the life of the university. <\/p>\n\n
For Welcome Association Italy, listening to and enhancing experiences like this means strengthening the path started with the WAI Atlas of University Welcome: a project created to better understand how international students experience university in Italy and to bring out, alongside critical issues, the good practices present in academic contexts.<\/p>\n\n
The Students4Students meeting therefore represents a further step in this journey: an opportunity to get to know an active student reality at the University of Bergamo and to value its contribution in the debate on reception, participation, representation and internationalization of university life.<\/p>\n\n
