Despite that, even in 2023, we witness the dynamics of the so-called \u201c<strong>glass ceiling\u201d<\/strong>, an invisible barrier that many women find as an obstacle in their careers. Today in Italy, we have a woman Prime Minister (the first since 1948) as well as a woman secretary of the first opposition party (first time). Do these two leading figures on the Italian political landscape finally mark a paradigm shift in Italy?<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Index:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#indice1\">Gender equality: where are we at?<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#indice2\">Examples from the Arab world: the case of Mauritania<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#indice3\">Ambassador &amp; woman in the Arab world<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Gender equality: where are we at?<\/h2>\n<p>In Italy, as well as for the rest of the Western countries, the celebrated <strong>Gender Gap<\/strong>, expression behind the women\u2019s claim to equal rights, has taken hold. For decades there have been talks about \u201cQuote rosa\u201d (a guaranteed amount of female figures for the institutions) in Parliament and the Senate, about female components in boards of directors, of women holding top positions in large state companies. The truth behind these \u201cslogans\u201d is that Italy ranks 63rd in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/\">World Economic Forum 2022<\/a> (WEF) <a href=\"https:\/\/www3.weforum.org\/docs\/WEF_GGGR_2022.pdf\">annual report<\/a>. This study evaluates country by country taking into account several parameters gathered in four pillars:<\/p>\n<table width=\"642\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"321\"><strong>PILLARS<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"161\"><strong>RANKING ITALY &#8217;21<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"160\"><strong>RANKING ITALY &#8217;22<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"321\">Economic Opportunity and Participation<\/td>\n<td width=\"161\">114th<\/td>\n<td width=\"160\">118th<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"321\">Level of Education<\/td>\n<td width=\"161\">57th<\/td>\n<td width=\"160\">61st<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"321\">Health and Life Expectancies<\/td>\n<td width=\"161\">118th<\/td>\n<td width=\"160\">116th<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"321\">Political Empowerment<\/td>\n<td width=\"161\">41st<\/td>\n<td width=\"160\">38th<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The ranking covers 146 countries, and as you can read from the comparison between the 2021 and 2022 reports, Italy still ranks in the middle overall. This translates into the fact that, globally, according to WEF data, it will take <strong>142 years<\/strong> to achieve gender parity.<\/p>\n<h2>Examples from the Arab world: the case of Mauritania<\/h2>\n<p>In a world still marked by the preponderance of men in the \u201ccontrol rooms\u201d, we want to bring to your attention an emblematic case of the figure of women in the Arab world. Indeed, the trade union WAI &#8211; Welcome Association Italy participated in the award event of Mauritanian Ambassador <strong>H.E. Zeineb Ely Salem<\/strong>. Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/home\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FAO<\/a> for the Middle East and North Africa, Ms. Zeineb Ely Salem is highly regarded in diplomatic circles and beyond. The award, by the Italo-Arab association <a href=\"https:\/\/www.assadakah.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Assadakah<\/a>, is due to the ambassador\u2019s commitment in protecting and raising awareness of the role of women, a subject very dear to her.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"indice3\">Ambassador &amp; woman in the Arab world<\/h2>\n<p>In addition to her diplomatic duties, serving as a bridge between Italy and Mauritania, Ms. Zeineb Ely Salem is very active <strong>in women\u2019s rights<\/strong>. It was no coincidence that the award ceremony took place on Women\u2019s Day. The ambassador is part of a very positive trend in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/Pan-Arabism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pan-Arab world<\/a>: the choice of female figures as diplomatic representatives in Italy. In addition to the case of Mauritania, it is possible to count Lebanon, Yemen, and Palestine. These countries have placed women as plenipotentiaries, and sometimes, as top diplomatic representatives in Italy. This choice is very relevant as Italy is, historically, a very important country in the political and cultural dynamics among Mediterranean countries.<\/p>\n<h3>Welcome Association Italy\u2019s role<\/h3>\n<p>Welcome Association Italy actively participated in Ambassador Zeineb Ely Salem\u2019s award ceremony. With the ambassador\u2019s applause and approval, the deputy national secretary reiterated and remarked on the trade union\u2019s support and willingness to help all <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.waitaly.net\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mauritanian citizens<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>practices of <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.waitaly.net\/en\/extra-ue-citizens-visa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">entry visa<\/a> and residence permit in Italy;<\/li>\n<li>application for tax code;<\/li>\n<li>housing search.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These are just some of the services that Welcome Association Italy makes available to its members. But our trade union offers more than just services and assistance.
