At the Embassy of Serbia in Rome the presentation of the book “War or Peace” by Giulio Tremonti: a discussion on the major European and international scenarios
At the kind invitation of theEmbassy of the Republic of Serbia in Rome, Welcome Association Italy participated in the presentation of the book “War or Peace” by Professor Giulio Tremonti, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Chamber of Deputies.
Hosted at the Serbian diplomatic headquarters in the capital, the meeting provided an important opportunity for in-depth discussions on key European and international scenarios, confirming the value of cultural diplomacy in strengthening relations between Serbia and Italy.
The initiative promoted by the Embassy of Serbia
The event was opened by H.E. the Ambassador of the Republic of Serbia to Italy, Mirjana Jeremic, who welcomed the guests, emphasizing the significance of the initiative and the value of Giulio Tremonti’s volume as a contribution to reflection on the issues that cross Europe and the international context.
In his speech, the Ambassador highlighted how the book draws attention to the importance of the Western Balkans for the future of the European Union, noting that the European future is decided not only in Ukraine, but also in the Balkans. He also recalled the need to address open issues within the framework of a shared European perspective.
Ambassador Jeremic also recalled that the presentation of the volume had already been held in Belgrade, on the occasion of the International Book Fair, expressing satisfaction with the publication of the Serbian translation of the work, which was the result of the cooperation between one of the most important publishing houses in Serbia and the recognized Italian publishing house Solferino. A publishing and cultural cooperation that testifies to the quality of relations between Serbia and Italy and the common wish for their further development.
The speeches and discussion that emerged during the event
The presentation of the volume, which was translated last year into Serbian, was enriched by a video message from the Chairman of the Culture Commission of the Chamber of Deputies, Federico Mollicone, while the moderation was entrusted to the Honorable Alessandro Amorese, a member of the same Commission.
In his speech, Giulio Tremonti drew attention to the issue of European enlargement, calling it fundamental “from north to south.” He also noted how one cannot imagine such a path in paternalistic or merely benevolent terms, since democracy is a process and not a product, and requires complex, deep and conscious paths. In this framework, he reiterated the centrality of a common perspective for the future of European states in the context of the Union.
The reflections contained in the volume
The book “War or Peace” offers a political and economic reading of the current historical phase, relating the present to some major junctures of the past.
From the sixteenth century to the contemporary world
The volume recalls how the sixteenth century witnessed four revolutionary events: the discovery of America, the invention of printing, Muslim pressure on the borders of Europe, and the first global financial unrest. It was a season that profoundly changed the balance of the continent, shifting Europe’s geopolitical axis from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic area.
The challenges of the present
According to the reflection proposed in the book, our time is also being traversed by parallel and deeply incisive phenomena: the “discovery” of Asia and especially China, the rise of the Net, the war on the eastern front — from Ukraine to the Middle East — and the risk of a new international financial disorder linked to the enormous mass of accumulated debt.
Over the course of the presentation, these themes emerged as points of particular interest, offering those present an opportunity to listen and learn more about the changes that interrogate the present and future of Europe and the West.
