How?

  1. Request the yellow-banded kit;
  2. Complete and sign Form 1 and attach the following documents:
  • 16.00 euro revenue stamp;
  • 4 passport-size photos;
  • Complete photocopy of passport;
  • Civil registration documentation proving family ties;
  • Photocopy of social security number;
  • Photocopy of the tax return of the foreign family member with whom cohesion is sought;
  • Certificate of housing eligibility (Art. 29 Legislative Decree 286/98);
  • Residence permit contribution receipt:
    • 80.00 (3 months to 1 year)
    • 100.00 (1 to 2 years)
  • Receipt of payment of €27.50 for the electronic residence permit;
  • Payment of €30.00 for postage.

Remember:

1. If the registry documentation comes from abroad, it must be translated and legalized according to the correct procedure;

2. The parameters of income, from a lawful source, that you must prove you have are:

  • For 1 family member: the annual amount of social allowance;
  • For 2 or 3 family members: twice the annual amount of the social allowance;
  • For 4 or more family members: three times the annual amount of the social allowance;

3. A foreigner who performs family cohesion with an Italian citizen or a citizen of a European Union member country or a foreigner who holds an EU residence permit is issued an EU long-term resident permit.

What can be done with a residence permit for family reunification?

The residence permit for family reasons allows access to welfare services; it can also be used for other activities permitted to the foreigner holder without the need for it to be converted or rectified, for the period of its duration. Thus, the foreigner may enroll in study or vocational training courses, enroll in the employment lists, and engage in self-employment or subordinate employment provided that he or she is registered in the registry list or, if the employment relationship is already in progress, subject to the employer ‘s notification to the Provincial Directorate of Labor in the former case, while in the latter, provided that the foreigner has acquired the qualification if the activity carried out requires it.

Who can apply for it?

A residence permit for family reasons can be issued :

  1. To the foreigner who has entered Italy with an entry visa for family reunification, or with an entry visa accompanying his or her family member in the cases provided for in Article 29 of the Consolidated Immigration Act, or with an entry visa for reunification with a minor child;
  2. To the child enrolled in the permit or EU long-term resident permit of the parent or caregiver upon reaching the age of 14;
  3. To a foreigner legally residing in another capacity for at least one year who has contracted marriage in the territory of the state with an Italian citizen or a citizen of a member state of the European Union, or with a legally residing foreign citizen;
  4. To a legally residing foreign family member who meets the requirements for reunification with an Italian citizen or a citizen of an EU member state residing in Italy, or with a foreigner legally residing in Italy. In this case, the family member’s permit is converted into a residence permit for family reasons. Conversion may be requested within one year from the date of expiration of the residence permit originally held by the family member. If said citizen is a refugee, the possession of a valid residence permit by the family member is disregarded;
  5. To the foreign parent, including a natural parent, of an Italian minor residing in Italy. In this case, the residence permit for family reasons is also issued regardless of the possession of a valid residence permit, provided that the applicant parent has not been deprived of parental authority under Italian law;
  6. To the unexpelled alien who is a relative within the 2nd degree of an Italian citizen;
  7. In other special cases stipulated by law.

Residence permit for minor children under 14 years of age

Do you have children under the age of 14? If yes, your child must be registered on your residence permit or your spouse’s permit until the child turns 14. The child follows the legal status of the cohabiting parent.

When applying for a residence permit for a minor under the age of 14, you will add to the documentation listed above:

  • Photocopy of the passport of the minor in question;
  • Photocopy of the child’s social security number;
  • Certificate of school attendance if the child is of the age subject to the right to education;
  • Translated and legalized maternity/paternity certificate if from another state.

Permit and renewal of residence permit minor children between 14 and 18 years old

Minors between the ages of 14 and 18 should apply at the Post Office for a personal residence permit by requesting the yellow-banded kit and attaching the following documentation:

  • Form 1 completed and signed;
  • 4 passport-size photos;
  • Photocopy of passport;
  • Photocopy of social security number;
  • Revenue stamp worth 16.00 euros;
  • Photocopy of the parent’s residence permit;
  • Family status certificate or self-certification of family relationship;
  • Certificate of school attendance if the child is of the age subject to the right-dover to education;
  • Receipt of payment of 27.50 euros for the issuance of the electronic residence permit.
  • Payment of 30.00 euros for postage.

This procedure also covers renewal of residence permit minor children, when the minor already holds a residence permit and needs to update or renew it upon expiration.

Renewal of residence permit for family reasons: documents and procedure

Do you need to renew your residence permit? Again, you will need to apply at a Post Office with a Friendly Desk by requesting the yellow-banded kit and attaching the following documents:

  • Duly completed and signed forms;
  • Photocopy of all passports;
  • 4 passport-size photos;
  • Revenue stamp worth 16.00 euros;
  • Photocopy of expiring residence permit;
  • Photocopy of social security number;
  • Statement by the family member who exercised family member reunification attesting to the possession of the necessary means to provide for the livelihood of the person concerned;
  • Photocopy of the family member’s residence permit;
  • Receipt for payment of the residence permit fee amounting to:
    • 80.00 (3 months to 1 year)
    • 100.00 (1 to 2 years)
  • Receipt of payment of 27.50 euros for the issuance of residence permits in electronic format.
  • Payment of 30.00 euros for postage.

Important timelines and requirements

  1. Application for renewal of residence permit for family reasons must be submitted at least 60 days before expiration.
  2. The initial requirements of the first release must be maintained.

The permit can be revokedincase of marriage or fictitious unions aimed only at entering Italy.
