Residence permit renewal: simple and updated guide 2026

If you live in Italy and your residence permit is about to expire, it is essential to know how renewal works, what documents are needed and what the timeframe is.

In this guide you will find all the essential information, clearly explained, to avoid mistakes and delays.

Residence permit renewal: the most important information

Before going into detail, here’s what you need to know right away:

  • Renewal can be applied for up to 60 days before the expiration and within 60 days after the expiration of the permit;
  • the application is made through postal kit;
  • costs start at about 70€;
  • times can be as long as several months;
  • with the receipt you can stay in Italy and study/work legally.

When to renew residence permit

We recommend that you start the process about 60 days before your permit expires.

It is not mandatory, but it is strongly recommended to avoid problems.

On the other hand, if your permit has already expired for more than 60 days and you have not applied for renewal, you may face consequences such as:

  • Inability to perform work activities;
  • The suspension of access to some services (such as the National Health Service).

How to renew a residence permit

The procedure is not complicated, but it is important to follow all the steps correctly.

1. Prepare the documents

First you need to gather all the required documentation, which varies according to your type of permit (study, work, family reunification, pending employment, and so on).

In order to renew a student residence permit, for example, it is necessary to submit a “certification of passing at least one proficiency exam for the 1st renewal,” that is, proof of having passed at least one university exam.

You can find the list of documents required by type of residence permit on the Immigration Portal website.

2. Fill out the postal kit.

After preparing the documents:

  • Go to a licensed post office (Friendly Desk Post Offices).
  • request yellow kit
  • fill out the forms
  • enter all required documents
  • send request

3. Go to the appointment at the police station (questura)

At this point you will receive:

  • A receipt, which counts as a temporary permit;
  • A summons letter to police headquarters.

With the application receipt, attached to the expiring permit, you are free to move around Italy.

Then you will be summoned to questura (for fingerprint collection) and finally you will have to wait for the new permit to be issued.

Documents for renewal of residence permit

Documents may change depending on your situation, but generally you will need them:

  • A 16€ revenue stamp;
  • 2-4 passport-size passport photos;
  • A copy of a valid passport;
  • expiring residence permit;
  • tax code;
  • Documentation proving income or livelihood for the duration of the requested permit;
  • Any health coverage that meets the requirements of the authorities.

How much does it cost to renew a residence permit

The total cost depends on the type of permit, but there are some fixed fees:

  • 16€ for the revenue stamp;
  • 30.46€ for permit production;
  • 30€ for shipping.

To these expenses must be added other contributions that vary depending on the duration and type of residence permit issued. For example:

  • 40€ for renewal of residence permits longer than 3 months and less than 1 year;
  • 50€ for residence permits longer than 1 year and less than 2 years;
  • 100€ for long-term permits.

Renewal timing: how long to wait

The time required to renew a residence permit can vary greatly. In some cases a few weeks is enough, in others it can take several months. It depends mainly on the number of applications handled by the police headquarters where you apply.

How long does the renewed residence permit last

The duration of the new permit depends on the reason for the stay:

  • Seasonal work: up to 9 months
  • Employment: up to 2 years
  • Self-employment: up to 2 years
  • Family reunification: up to 2 years

Normally, the duration of a renewed residence permit does not exceed that of the initial permit; however, there are exceptions introduced by the Cutro Decree, later converted into law with amendments into Law no. 50/23. In the case of residence permits for self-employment, permanent employment or family reunification, renewal can be extended to a maximum duration of 3 years.
