WAI participates in the Purísima celebration at the Embassy of Nicaragua

Introduction

On December 6, Welcome Association Italy (WAI) had the honor of being invited to the Embassy of the Republic of Nicaragua in Italy to take part in the celebration of Purísima, one of the most representative holidays of Nicaraguan culture.
The event, led by H.E. Monica Robelo Raffone, brought together diplomatic representatives, journalists, associations and members of civil society in an atmosphere of sharing, dialogue and intercultural openness.

It was a valuable participation for WAI, which has been promoting activities of cultural cooperation, intergenerational dialogue and bringing international communities together in Italy for years.

The meaning of Purísima: a bridge between spirituality, identity and culture

Purísima is not just a religious festival dedicated to the Immaculate Conception: it is a complex cultural phenomenon, deeply rooted in Nicaraguan identity, blending elements of Catholic tradition with indigenous symbolism of pre-Columbian origin.

A syncretic festival with universal value

Its expressive power lies precisely in the syncretic dimension:

  • unites faith and culture,
  • combines rituality and sociality,
  • represents a time of cohesion for families, neighborhoods and communities.

This fusion of religious and secular elements makes the Purísima an open, inclusive cultural heritage in which even those who do not directly share the religious tradition can identify.

La Gritería: the voice of a people

One of the most moving rituals is La Gritería, the famous choral exchange:
“¿Quién causa tanta alegría?”“¡La Concepción de María!
This moment is not only a liturgical act, but an expression of community, identity and collective memory.

Celebrating it in Rome, in a diplomatic context, means bringing a living fragment of Nicaragua to Italy, strengthening the bond between the two countries and enhancing the presence of the Latin American diaspora.

A major diplomatic event

Also present at the celebration was H.E. Maria Elena Uzzo, Chargé d’Affaires of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in Italy, testifying to the importance Latin American representations attach to cultural collaboration as a tool for international relations and social diplomacy.

The participation of journalist Maddalena Celano

Also among the guests was journalist Maddalena Celano, an expert on Latin America, a prestigious figure and former moderator of the “Latin America” panel during the WAI conference on Oct. 2.
Her presence added further value to the initiative, thanks to her expertise in reading Latin American cultural phenomena and her role as a bridge between information, academia and civil society.

Why WAI’s participation is strategic

Welcome Association Italy’s commitment goes beyond membership representation:
WAI sees cultural diplomacy as a key tool for:

  • Fostering the integration of international communities in Italy;
  • Promote dialogue between institutions and civil society;
  • Enhance the cultures of partner countries;
  • Build collaborative networks involving students, professionals, associations and the diplomatic corps;
  • Strengthen its social mission from a multicultural and inclusive perspective.

WAI’s presence at events such as the Purísima consolidates institutional relationships and opens up new prospects for cultural and social cooperation.

Statement by Carlo Palumbo – Deputy National Secretary of Welcome Association Italy

“Participating in the Purísima at the Embassy of Nicaragua was more than just an institutional appointment: it was an encounter with a tradition that embodies the identity strength of a people and the beauty of intercultural dialogue.
I deeply thank H.E. Monica Robelo Raffone for sharing with us this heartfelt moment, capable of uniting faith, culture and community.
WAI will continue to support initiatives that foster the relationship between diplomatic representations and the territory, convinced that cultural cooperation is one of the most effective ways to build inclusion, knowledge and the future.”

Conclusion – A path that continues

This participation marks another step in the path that Welcome Association Italy is determinedly pursuing:
building networks, creating bridges, valuing diversity as a resource and promoting constant dialogue among the international communities present in Italy.

WAI renews its commitment to work with embassies, associations, journalists, students and citizens to expand the space of cultural participation and integration.
