The best neighborhoods for students in Rome in 2026
Rome is a huge, spread-out city and very different from Milan. Precisely because of this, choosing the right neighborhood is not just a matter of taste, but a strategic decision that directly affects the quality of your college experience.
In 2026, with rising demand and prices increasingly variable between one area to another, finding housing in Rome means being able to balance three key factors: proximity to the university, transport links, and budget. As several student guides and communities reveal, living close to your university campus remains the real game changer in a city where commutes can become long and unpredictable.
How to choose where to live in Rome as a student
What are the important aspects to consider when looking for student housing in Rome?
- the distance to the university
- The presence of the metro (more reliable than buses)
- the available budget
- the lifestyle (active and social or quiet)
In general, central and university neighborhoods such as San Lorenzo or Piazza Bologna remain the most popular each year, but some semi-central areas are growing rapidly due to more affordable prices.
How much does it cost to rent student housing in Rome
For a single room for students, the average price is about 550-700€ per month.
In particular:
- 400-500€ in suburban or less central areas;
- 550-700€ as the city average;
- 700-850€ in central or university areas.
Best neighborhoods for students in Rome
San Lorenzo
If you study at La Sapienza, San Lorenzo is the first neighborhood you need to consider.
Located between Termini and the university campus, it has always been the focal point of Roman student life. One of the city’s youngest communities is concentrated here, with affordable bar and clubs, copy shops, bars and a plenty of social opportunities.
The main reason for choosing it is simple: you can do everything on foot. This, in Rome, is a huge advantage.
On the flip side, it is a chaotic and noisy neighborhood, especially at night. It’s not an ideal choice if you’re looking for quiet, but it’s perfect if you want to fully enjoy the student experience. Prices also remain relatively affordable compared to other central areas.
Piazza Bologna
The Piazza Bologna neighborhood probably represents the best compromise for a student in 2026. The area is close to Sapienza and well connected thanks to the metro line B, as well as having everything needed in everyday life: supermarkets, bars, libraries and green areas. Not surprisingly, it is considered one of the most desirable areas for college students.
Compared to San Lorenzo, the atmosphere here is more orderly and safe, while maintaining a good social life. The main limitation is price: demand is very high and finding a room can take time.
Pigneto
In recent years Pigneto has established itself as one of the most attractive neighborhoods for students and expats in general. Many digital nomads also choose this area, attracted by its modern identity of independent clubs, street art, vintage stores and cafes where you can study or work.
Students especially appreciate it because of its proximity to Sapienza, and its excellent tram and Metro C connections.
However, it is not a “tidy” neighborhood: some areas are still uneven and less well-kept than other areas of the city.
Trastevere
Trastevere is one of the city’s most iconic neighborhoods and continues to attract many students, especially international ones.
The central location, historic atmosphere, and nightlife make it unique. It is also very convenient to international and private universities in the area, such as John Cabot University, American University of Rome (AUR) and LUMSA University.
However, as one of the most expensive areas of Rome — and often among the most touristy and noisy — it cannot always be called a student neighborhood. It is definitely more of an “experiential” choice than a practical one.
Ostiense and Garbatella
If you study at theUniversity of Roma Tre, this is the area of choice. The Ostiense and Garbatella neighborhoods are experiencing strong growth and are also increasingly in demand by students from other universities. They offer a good mix of accessibility, average prices and quality of life.
Ostiense, in particular, has become a creative and cultural hub, with converted industrial spaces and spaces, while Garbatella retains a more residential identity.
San Giovanni
Those seeking a quieter but still strategic solution tend to move toward San Giovanni and Appio-Latino. These neighborhoods are well connected-thanks to the metro line A and C, and offer a more residential environment, with costs that are often more affordable than the city centre.
These are not particularly lively areas in terms of nightlife, but they work well for those who want to focus on studying without sacrificing comfort.
Trieste
Finally, students enrolled atLuiss Guido Carli University prefer to rent a room in the Trieste area (cheaper than nearby Parioli). This is a residential neighborhood but with good nightlife, well connected by metro and with excellent restaurants.
What is the right neighborhood for you?
As you may have guessed, the choice of neighborhood in Rome depends more on your lifestyle than on the city itself.
- If you want to experience the university dimension to the fullest → San Lorenzo and Bologna Square
- If you want a creative and dynamic environment → Pigneto
- If you want the experience of living in one of Rome’s most iconic neighborhoods → Trastevere
- If you prefer quiet and practicality → San Giovanni, Ostiense and Garbatella.
